Bookseller who has a big beard, many books (never enough books) and a cat (of course a cat).

I also love film and music, not as much as books but it's a close run thing.

Katherine Rundell. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC. (272 Katherine Rundell. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC. (272p) ISBN 9781526605511

A girl with a red cape, a boy soldier, a boy with an axe and, of course, wolves. The Wolf Wilder is a magnificent re-imagining of a classic tale written by Katherine Rundell and gloriously illustrated by Gelrev Ongbico is set in the snows of revolutionary Russia.

This is the story of Feo (Feodora) who is a wolf wilder, as is her mother. Wolf wilders take wolves who were raised as pets in Tsarist Russia but are no longer wanted for one reason or another and help them to be wild once more.

A story about a young girls adventures against the cruelty and fears of people, especially people in power who want to control others through fear they instil.

Along the way Feo meets several companions and friends who help her as much as she helps them and they grow together throughout the story.

There is both humour and loss which Feo and her friends have to contend with, though the peril is set at a level to help the story line it is never so much that it overwhelms the reader.

I found the book well written and set at a pace that kept me reading until the very last page, where I was disappointed that the story had ended as I wanted to know more.

I would recommend this to anyone between 8 and 80 as it is a refreshing read and has something for everyone.

Lucy Strange. Chicken House. (304p) ISBN 978191065 Lucy Strange. Chicken House. (304p) ISBN 9781910655030

The Secret of Nightingale Wood is Lucy Strange’s debut novel and begins with a setting similar to ‘The Railway Children’ by E. Nesbit. It is set in the early 20th century and in a country setting reminiscent of ‘The Railway Children’, with a change in family home, with a similar family make up, and an unspoken tragedy at the centre of the story.

The similarities do end quickly though, as Henry has to deal with difficulties that are reminiscent of those in ‘Wide Sargasso Sea’ by Jean Rhys and are slightly harsher than those Nesbit’s era were prepared to deal with in a children’s book, though Nesbit did write horror stories for adults which were much darker than her children’s stories.

Lucy Strange’s hero, Henry has to face a lot of problems and feels that she has to do these alone, but as the story develops, so does the friendships she makes develop. She finds support and friendship in some strange places.

The two main shadows over the story are the loss of her elder brother and the aftermath of WWI, both of these are themes throughout the book and weave all the way through the book and each other.

This is a well written book that flows from the moment you open the page and is lovingly decorated throughout with pen sketches of various locations and objects from the story.

I was so looking forward to Grief is the Thing with Feathers after hearing so much about it.

It was such a refreshing change from the works I usually read, prose and poetry combined into a brave journey through grief and the feelings that come from being the one left behind to continue the shared life.

I was warned it was a quick read and it really is, just over a morning but but what a morning.

A family grieving their dead mother/wife are visited by the Grief of the title, at times confidant, at times trickster.

I was in floods of tears in the coffee shop reading this, but I also burst out laughing at parts.

Fluid, energetic, dissonant, there was such a great play on words which at times were straight prose, at other times poetry and song lyrics, all of which helped the book flow wonderfully .

A great debut.

I’d already loved ‘Around the World in 80 Trees’ in this loose series from Laurence King Publishing and was really looking forward to this one, so much I popped into work on my holiday to pick it up as soon as I found out it was there.
I was immediately enthralled by the beautifully shining illustrations from Ryuto Mikaye, turning each bird into a masterpiece of flow and movement on the page.

The book follows the formula of the previous two ‘Around the World in 80…’ books and explores a small selection of birds from around the world in the context of their importance, interaction with humans, rarity, or some other factor chosen by the author. Hopefully some just because of how beautiful they are!

A couple of the birds I enjoyed reading about the most are both extremely strange little beasts. The Resplendent Quatzal is such a beautifully colourful bird linked with a lot of South American mythology and I’ve always been fascinated by it. The other is the Crested Caracara which we were told is really intelligent and curious, but has become a pest in certain areas of Central America, raiding houses by going down chimneys and opening doors and windows.

Small chapters make this series a perfect bedside book, dipping into at night for a relaxing read, though it never really works like that as I again devoured this whole book in one sitting.

Always look forward to this series and waiting for the next one.

Ben Aaronovitch. Orion Publishing. (432p) ISBN 978 Ben Aaronovitch. Orion Publishing. (432p) ISBN 9780575097582

I’ve been reading this series of books since they came out as I’ve always been a sucker for urban magic, showing the magical underside of our ordinary world, revealing the wizard behind the curtain.

Rivers of London introduces us to the recurring cast of the series; Peter Grant, Lesley May, Thomas Nightingale, the Rivers of London, Molly, and some others, as Peter and Lesley become embroiled in the magical worlds and feuds of London.

The development of the characters whilst investigating a series of seemingly unrelated crimes is done extremely well, weaving the personal into the overall setting, foreshadowing a lot of future stories in this first outing.

Peter’s development as a magician is well-paced and developed in a way that you could follow as more of the secrets of The Folly revealed, this includes building some of Nightingale’s and the societies back history.

My favourite’s though are the Rivers and the relationships between Mama Thames and Old Man Thames and their children.

Ghosts, genius loci, secret societies, history, police procedural, vestigium, there is a lot introduced but keep up and you are massively rewarded.

This is a well-paced story and much darker than the humour makes you think it will be so watch out for that.

Kate Griffin. Little Brown. (496p) ISBN 9781841497 Kate Griffin. Little Brown. (496p) ISBN 9781841497334

I have several books I reread if I get into a bit of a rut and find myself unable to read, A Madness of Angels is one of them.

Familiarity is one of the main reasons, but this is such a great example of urban fantasy with a great original premise that it still grabs me and excites me after all this time (2009).

We are introduced to a world where sorcerers and other magic users tap into the magic around them in the urban environment, a world of litterbugs, neon demons, personifications of an idea, and hunger…

Matthew Swift was killed two years ago and is out for vengeance, maybe even justice. And he has very powerful friends/symbiotes/angels to help him achieve this.

A fast-paced urban fantasy which has a great twist on the genre. This first book is a brilliant setup for the rest of the series but doesn’t feel like just pure world building and exposition.

It develops the magic of the world perfectly, showing various different factions, various powers, and hints at so much more.

Some brilliant set pieces including a pit fit, dragons, aluminium fairies, Jeremy the Troll, and so much more make this one of my favourite re-reads.
