The Paper Bag Princess

Another book that I’ve had sitting on the shelves for what feels like forever, I can’t really remember why I got it but I’m pretty sure it was at the recommendation of someone as a ‘book you need to read’.

Of course they were right, short and sharp, this book had me laughing a lot, especially the end (no spoilers) where I barked out loud. Takes a dragon and princess story and turns it on its head.

The story of Princes Elizabeth as she tracks down Prince Ronald who has been abducted by the fierce, fire-breathing dragon.

With many obstacles to overcome and dressed only in a paper bag, Elizabeth shows a great deal of cunning and intelligence.

The ending was totally unexpected but excellent.

A brilliant read, supported with hilarious illustrations.

Kate on the Case: The Call of the Silver Wibbler

Kate on the Case: The Call of the Silver Wibbler

I was given the first in the series out of the blue by the publisher and I liked it so much that when I found out there was a second coming out I had to ask for a copy to read and review.

And I wasn’t disappointed.

The Call of the Silver Wibbler is as fun and fast-paced as the first book in the series, and Hannah’s illustrations still compliment the story wonderfully and are full of energy and humour.

In this story Kate has been asked to write a review for The Lookout Post by her hero, Catherine Rodríguez, but there just seems to be way too much SHRIMP! but her dad does seem in his element and enjoying himself.

She want’s something exciting to happen, as does Rupert, anything but more shrimp…

As it happens she gets caught up in the search for the most elusive bird, The Silver Wibbler, makes new friends, foils dastardly plots, and follows her true reporters instincts.

I loved this book, another beautiful little book from Hannah Peck, and I’m leaves me wanting to read more from Hannah and Kate.

Rigatoni the Pasta Cat

Michael Rosen, illustrated Tony Ross. Andersen Press. (80p) ISBN: 9781783448432
Rigatoni the Pasta Cat

Rigatoni the Pasta Cat

I received this at work from Andersen Press and am always happy to get a surprise Rosen/Ross book.

This didn’t disappoint!

Written in his usual warm and humorous tone, Michael tells us the tale of Rigatoni the Pasta Cat, who loooooooooooves his pasta (who doesn’t!) and his family know this and indulge his food choices.

But! and this is a big but, his family leave on holiday and the care of Rigatoni is left to a well-meaning, but not knowledgeable, friend who thinks that cat food is the thing that cats should eat… and from there the story unfolds.

This is all supported by the free and relaxed drawing style of Tony Ross showing the personalities of all involved, they are such a wonderful partnership.

A beautiful story of found family, friends thinking they are doing what’s best, and of course pasta, had a blast reading this for myself and to others.
