I asked for a review copy of this from Thames & Hudson as I’m on a path of relearning a lot of the esoteric knowledge I used to know and wanted to expand on that knowledge.

From start to finish this book took me no more than 36 hours as it was so fascinating and well written, lots of little inserts and asides to add to what the chapter was talking about were also good.

One of the best bits though were the amount of images throughout, which was handy as it was selling itself on looking at the visual cultures of various pagan societies.

Though it feels a bit light on content due the panels and images what content it has is really informative and interesting and in fact not what I was expecting at all, rather than focusing on the New Pagans it focused on the roots of pre-Abrahamic religions and the relationship these religions had with the world.

Three main categories; Ancient Ways, Ritual, and Community serve to give a broad categorisation of various aspects of religions from around the world and briefly compares different practices also showing commonality between religions and with newer Pagan movements.

Overall a great read and a definite keeper for my esoterica shelves.
